As the weather starts to heat up and the sun starts shining brighter, many of us begin to think about our summer plans. For some, this means going on a trip to a new and exciting location, and for others, it means taking time to relax and unwind. This summer, 2022, my family of four is looking forward to exploring the Sunshine State where we live.

We moved to Florida 5 years ago after spending several years in Hawaii, but have not had the time to start exploring much outside of our city of Orlando. As my kids get older, I hope to explore further afield, but start out with day and weekend trips around Florida.

The kids got out of school this last week and, to celebrate, we took them to the Silver Spurs Rodeo and Capone’s Dinner and Show. Mercedes and Giovanni had a significantly better time at the Capone’s Dinner than the Rodeo. I used to go to rodeos growing up - my grandfather and father were team ropers - but they have little of the nostalgia or interest that I did. The Capone Dinner and Show was funny, interesting, and had great food! My daughter, who loves pizza, found their pizza a little too spicy, and they immediately got her something else to eat.

Next up on in our summer plans was to have both the kids go to a week-long Summer Camp at the Orlando Science Center. Unfortunately, everyone wants to do the Wizards 101 and Mercedes wasn’t able to get in, but Giovanni is spending the week of June 6-10 at the All Paws on Deck camp and is really excited about it. To make up for Mercedes missing OSC, I will be taking her to Universal Studios to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Our last day trip will be to St. Augustine, where we are planning to see the Castillo de San Marco, the Lighthouse, and the Pirate and Treasure Museum. We expect to take Kaia, our dog, with us as we are working on getting her more aclimated to being around other people and dogs. I am writing up a homeschooling lesson plan for St. Augustine that the kids can work on and maybe write something about their experience.

In July, after the holiday, we plan to go to Miami for a 3 day, 2 night experience. I’ve looked into getting the FLEX pass in order to see as much as we can during that time, but I’m finding that the tours and events may not be extremely child friendly. We’d like to go to the Frost Museum, go on the Duck Tours, and the Miami Children’s Museum.

Lastly, we are going to take the kids out to the Kennedy Space Center. Both of the kids go to a STEM elementary school, where they have learned a lot about coding, science, engineering, and techonology. The Kennedy Space Center should be right up their alley!

Overall, I am incredibly excited about our Florida adventure this summer. With its stunning beaches, vibrant cities, and incredible natural landscapes, Florida truly has something for everyone. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or culture, this southern state has it all. I’ll write an update at the end of the summer after we’ve gone on all our trips and share what worked and what the kids enjoyed most. Happy summer 2022!
